Fitness Tips for People Working Desk Jobs

A number of recent studies have underlined the alarming dangers a predominantly sedentary job could have on your health and fitness. These studies have found clear links between working long hours while sitting and the development of long-term health issues like obesity and heart ailments, increasing your risks of a premature death. Here are some simple steps you can follow to restrict the damage caused to your health while working at your desk job :

Standing and moving at regular intervals
Make an effort to get up and walk around every once in a while, in between work. Using routines such as the Pomodoro Technique can help you condition yourself for this. But the best way to go about things is to find a way to get your work done while standing. Find a high counter that you can use as your workstation, or better yet, get one of the standing workstations that are increasingly in vogue these days. Develop habits like walking over for a conversation instead of chatting online, or getting that cup of coffee yourself instead of being served, so you get some exercise in between work.

Get your posture right
Most cases of neck and back pain nowadays are caused due to maintaining poor posture for extended durations, generally working on desks that are positioned at unsuitable heights or angles. Your workstation should be positioned more or less level with your head, so you don't have to look down or up at it for lengthy periods of time. Also, try to have your workplace set up so you don't have to crane your neck, or look at things at an angle for long.
